What the label tells you… or maybe not?

If you have purchased eggs from a retailer recently, then you know that the most expensive eggs for sale are the ones known as “cage-free” or “free-range.”  Why should these eggs have a higher value than the average commercial eggs?  Part of the reason for this higher value is because these eggs cost more money to produce; however, they are better, healthier eggs all the way around.  They have a higher nutritional value and the hens themselves are healthier than the caged birds kept under artificial light and fed a steady commercial diet.  True free-range chickens are those that range outdoors on pasture.  Meaning they do what all chickens do naturally: eat bugs, greens, and whatever leftovers they can scrounge or scratch up.
The challenge for us homesteaders, however, comes in the form of keeping and managing a flock of free-range chickens in order to reap the benefit of their eggs. fresh eggs from the backyard flock Continue reading

Sweet Addiction

Hello and Welcome!

Its January and we are back in the race to make our bodies healthier! The New Years resolutions boost gym memberships and the sale of exercise equipment is skyrocketing!
By February, the gym membership is just monthly charge on your credit card and the new exercise equipment is gathering dust in the basement, or gets an honorable mention in the “bargain box” in your local news paper….

Since you and I are truly interested in a healthier lifestyle we avoid such radical measures and use this month of diet craziness to do a 4 week detox. Why do I love January? Because I don’t have to bend my way to others, but others are happy to accommodate my special eating habits. Everybody is on one diet or another anyway… so its super easy. Nobody asks probing questions every time I refuse a drink at a bar or a heavy restaurant meal. Continue reading

Apples, Apples and more Apples

Hello and Welcome!
Isn’t it a lovely sight, to watch your apple trees bud out in spring and then bloom? Swarms of bees do their work in early summer and pollinate those delicate white flowers. With every spring rain and hard wind, you wonder how many of those precious flowers are torn off the trees, to never turn into ripe apples.

A few month of waiting, watering and watching the tree work it’s miracle, the apples are ripe. And they are ALL ripe at once! So what now? Hundreds of pounds of ripe apples?  An Apple a day, keeps the doctor away Continue reading

Summer time is Margarita time

Hello and Welcome!
I’m back from summer break. Summers in Montana are very short and very hot! It gets super busy around the Barn and so I thought I give my weekly blog posts a nice summer break!
Next week School in back on and for me this means things are going back into the normal routine.

But a little bit of summer feeling is still lingering, so I thought I devote this post to one of my favorite summer drinks! Margarita summer drink and the effects on your body
Margaritas!
This classic summer cocktail makes you feel relaxed when you slurp the slushy freshness… but your organs are working overtime.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love them as much as the next gal who sits in a comfy restaurant back yard on a mellow summer evening! But knowing that alcohol is one of the first things that should be dropped when you do a detox or start with the Right Start Program, I just thought I give this lovely drink a little more scrutiny… from a bodies perspective. Continue reading
